Zhiyun Smooth 4 Vertigo Mode Tutorial

Vertigo is the feeling that you’re moving when you’re not. Or it might feel like things around you are moving when they aren’t.” – https://www.healthline.com/health/vertigo

To recreate the Vertigo Effect on video, the subject stays the same size in the frame, while the background shrinks or stretches.

The effect is achieved by moving the camera toward or away from the subject while zooming out or in to keep the subject the same size in the frame throughout.

The very first feature you see on the Zhiyun Smooth 4 sales page is the Vertigo Shot!

How to use the Vertigo mode on the Zhiyun Smooth 4?

Now, go get a Smooth 4 and follow along with these steps.

First, forget about what you have seen in other people’s tutorial on the vertigo effect.

Do the VIDEOLANE method because it simply works.

Let’s jump into it…

  • Find a place with a distant background.
  • Ensure the subject or actor is near you.
  • Connect the ZY Play app to the Smooth 4.
  • Frame the subject in the center of the screen… because that’s where the autofocus is.
  • Put the Smooth 4 to Lock mode.
  • Press the Menu button on the Smooth 4.
  • Everything else below is on the ZY play app.
  • Tap the camera icon. Tap Enter.
  • Scroll the camera modes to Vertigo. Tap on Vertigo. Tap Enter.
  • Tap WT. Slide to maximum zoom. Tap Enter.
  • Tap Add.
  • Tap WT. Slide to minimum zoom. Tap Enter.
  • Leave duration at default 10 seconds.
  • Tap Add.
  • Tap WT. Slide to maximum zoom. Tap enter.
  • Change duration to 3 seconds.
  • Tap Enter.
  • Scroll down.
  • Tap Start.
  • Move the smooth 4 forward slowly keeping the subject at the same size on the screen.
  • Watch the timer bar. Get ready to stop when it’s reaching the second Waypoint.
  • After the second Waypoint, hold still for the next 3 seconds.

Play back the recording. Is it good?

The first time is never perfect. Repeat the above steps several times to get it right.

Press the Menu button to go back and start all over.

In the meantime go try it for yourself.
