Types of YouTube Video Ads

When you watch YouTube videos, you will notice video ads interrupting frequently. Some hate it. Some love it.

If you are a YouTube Viewer, you might find it annoying. If you are a YouTube Creator, more ads on your videos mean more money for you. If you are a brand, then paying for YouTube Ads as an Advertiser means more leads, sales, or awareness.

In this post, let’s find out more about YouTube Video Ads.

Types

Available video ad formats include

  1. Skippable in-stream ads,
  2. Non-skippable in-stream ads,
  3. Video discovery ads,
  4. Outstream ads,
  5. Bumper ads, and
  6. YouTube Masthead ads.

Skippable in-stream ads play before, during, or after other videos. After 5 seconds, the viewer has an option to skip the ad. When a viewer (1) watches 30 seconds of your video or the duration if it’s shorter than 30 seconds or (2) interacts with your video, whichever comes first, the Advertiser pays (CPV). With CPM, the Advertiser pays each time the ad is shown 1,000 times.

Non-skippable in-stream ads are 15 seconds or shorter and plays before, during or after another video. Viewers do not have the option to skip the ad. Advertisers pay each time their ad is shown 1,000 times (CPM).

Video discovery ads consist of thumbnail images that appear on YouTube search results, alongside related YouTube videos, and on the YouTube mobile homepage. Advertisers will be charged only when viewers choose to watch the ad by clicking the thumbnail.

Outstream ads are mobile-only (phones and tablet devices) video ads that play on partner websites and within apps. So you won’t see these within YouTube. Outstream ads begin playing with the sound off. Users tap the ad to unmute. Advertisers are only charged when more than half of the ad screen space is shown for two seconds or more (vCPM).

Bumper ads are a short 6-seconds or less video ad format that plays before, during, or after another video. Viewers do not have the option to skip the ad. Advertisers pay each time the ad is shown 1,000 times (CPM).

Masthead ads are a native video-ads that appear at the top of the YouTube Home feed on desktop, mobile, and TV screens. Masthead ads are only available on a reservation basis through a Google sales representative. Advertisers are charged on a fixed cost-per-day (CPD) or cost-per-thousand-impressions (CPM) basis.
