I keep telling beginners to get a mirrorless camera for videos, and not the DSLR. Here’s why.
DSLR
First, what is DSLR?
DSLR = Digital Single Lens Reflex…
…where Reflex mean reflection.
Light from the lens is reflected off a mirror into the viewfinder.
The mirror is placed right in front of the sensor in a DSLR camera body.
Without the mirror, what you see in the viewfinder is not what the lens sees.
When a picture is taken, the mirror flips up for the light to hit the sensor.
When shooting video, the mirror has to stay up throughout the recording.
A robust spring motor does the job of flipping and holding the mirror up.
That motor holding up the mirror long enough will heat up and needs to rest.
Hence the 29-minute maximum video recording limit.
Mirrorless
Video camcorders don’t have mirrors.
Compact cameras don’t have mirrors.
So when we say mirrorless cameras, we are referring to Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Cameras, aka MILC.
The viewfinder in a mirrorless camera is a digital display.
The digital display shows the accurate processed image from the sensor.
Autofocus, Stabilization, Image Quality
There are other advantages of a modern mirrorless camera like auto-focus, stabilization and image quality.
Watch this educational video for more information about the differences between the old DSLR and the modern Mirrorless cameras.
