I am getting ready for a major holiday trip to New Zealand, and I had a dilemma: I wanted cinematic aerial footage.
That is exactly why I bought the brand new DJI NEO 2. It promises to be the ultimate budget-friendly travel companion—costing less than $300 (SGD) and weighing practically nothing. But does it live up to the hype?
I decided to unbox it, weigh it, and perform a risky indoor flight test to find out.

Before we dive into the specs, you can watch my full reaction and the indoor flight test in the video below:

What’s Inside the Box?
First, let’s talk about what you actually get for under $300. DJI has kept the packaging minimal, which I appreciate.
Upon breaking the seal and opening the box, here is what I found:
* The DJI Neo 2 Drone (obviously!)
* 2 x Spare Propellers.
* A Mini Cross-head Screwdriver (essential for changing those props).
* USB-C to USB-C Cable for charging and data transfer.
* Documentation: Quick Start Guide, Safety Guide, and Pilot Responsibility info.
* DJI Stickers.
It’s a basic kit, but it’s everything you need to get in the air immediately.
The Weigh-In: Truth vs. Specs
One of the biggest selling points of this drone is that it falls under the 250g weight limit, which means in many countries (including Singapore and New Zealand), you don’t need to register it or get a license for recreational flying.
* Official Specs: 151g
* My Scale: 153g
It came in at 153g on my scale. That is remarkably close to the specs and incredibly lightweight. For context, most modern smartphones weigh more than this drone!
Why I Bought the DJI Neo 2 (3 Reasons)
I didn’t just buy this because it was new. I bought it to solve specific problems for my content creation:
* Travel Friendly: As mentioned, I’m filming my New Zealand trip. I needed something I could toss in my bag and forget about until I needed it.
* Controller-Free Flight: This is the game-changer. You don’t need a remote controller. The drone uses AI to track you. This means I can set it up, get a quick shot of me hiking or walking, and land it without fiddling with joysticks.
* The Price: It cost me less than $300 SGD. For a 4K camera that flies, the value proposition is insane.
Setup and Activation
The setup process was straightforward but required the DJI Fly App.
Inside the box, there is a QR code you need to scan.
* Download the DJI Fly App.
* Power on the drone (press once, then press and hold).
* Connect the app to the aircraft.
* Update/Activate (this took a few seconds).
Once activated, the drone was ready to fly.
The “Risky” Indoor Flight Test
I usually advise against flying drones indoors, especially for a first flight. However, I wanted to test the “Spotlight” feature—where the drone locks onto you and keeps you in the frame.
I set it to Spotlight mode, it counted down 3-2-1, and… it worked perfectly.
The drone hovered with surprising stability for such a small device. It tracked me as I moved around the studio. It was loud (as small drones tend to be), but the stability gave me confidence that this will perform well outdoors.
Battery & Charging Specs
After the short flight, I needed to charge it up. Here is what you need to know about the power:
* Charging Time: Approx. 70 minutes via USB-C.
* Flight Time: Rated for roughly 17 minutes per battery.
If you are traveling, I highly recommend picking up a power bank so you can charge it on the go.
Conclusion: Is it worth it?
Based on the unboxing and the indoor stability test, the DJI Neo 2 feels like a winner for budget travelers and vloggers. It removes the friction of setting up a large drone and allows you to capture B-roll effortlessly.
However, the real test is coming up next. How will a 153g drone handle the winds of New Zealand?
I will be doing a full outdoor flight test in my next video, so make sure you are subscribed to the channel so you don’t miss it!
