Well, I have used Sony Vegas Pro since version 4 and I can safely say the Sony Vegas Pro 11 is not just an upgrade, it is an evolution!

The number ONE evolutionary feature is the GPU Accelerated Performance.

GPU Accelerated Performance means faster rendering, especially for high-definition videos. If you have edited videos before, you know that no matter how fast you can split, trim and assemble your video, in the end you have to wait a dreadfully long time for the video editing software to compile your edits into one piece, aka render  time.

What are the other new features on Sony Vegas Pro 11? Stereoscopic 3D editing, NewBlue Titler Pro, superior audio control and more, which I am not really concerned about.

I have gathered nuggets of reviews from other Sony Vegas Pro 11 users which I found are more interesting.

The GOOD

Faster Render Speed

Most reviews confirm that the render speed is indeed notably faster.

Sync Links vs Apple Final Cut Pro X’s magnetic timeline

Here’s one for those considering Apple Final Cut Pro X.

“A new Sync Links feature provides a useful addition to the Group command and ripple editing options, creating a one-way link between two objects. For example, a titles object that’s linked to a video clip can be moved independently on the timeline, but when the video clip is moved, the titles object will follow it and stay synchronised. This is a similar concept to Apple Final Cut Pro X’s magnetic timeline, but Sync Links is much more controllable and predictable. The only downside is links must be made manually and individually.”

This feature alone is enough to convince me not to use Final Cut Pro. For those using Apple Final Cut Pro will know how cumbersome it is to encode every other video format to QuickTime before you can even start editing.

The BAD

4 Individual Titling Effect Tools

The Sony Vegas Pro 11 now come with 4 titling tools. Each have its own strengths and weaknesses. We now have a wide choice to create effects on our once boring texts. What’s so bad about that? Why don’t they combine all the tools and effects into one?  Text effects made with one tool cannot be modified with another tool and that’s a little inconvenient.

That’s the only bad thing I and the others are talking about.

Following up on the “How to Set Up a Mini Green Screen Studio in 7 Steps” video tutorial, here is how to edit green screen footage with Sony Vegas Pro.

The process is applicable to other versions of Sony Vegas, like the lower-priced and highly recommended Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum.

I specially made this tutorial after getting many related questions at my talk in BNI Rendezvous Singapore on “Promote Your Business with YouTube – 5 More Easy Ways“.

For Mac users, your free iMovie comes with green screen editing function, though the effect quality is minimal as compared with the controls you get from Sony Vegas. I will demonstrate in this video all the easy settings required to make a good green screen video.

In this article, I will reveal the process of setting up a mini green screen studio in our office.

The studio size is good enough for one person, filmed at mid shot neatly from the waist up.

This studio was actually created for our videography class training. However, we do have clients using it as a service to create welcome message videos for their websites.

So here is how to set up a mini green screen studio in seven steps.

1. Use a small room with a bare wall.

Since this is going to be a mini studio, use a small room at least 5 metres wide. Choose a bare wall for the green screen and clear any clutter near that wall.

2. Get a nearly pure green fabric material.

A non-reflective cloth will work as long as it is nearly pure green. Make sure there are no patterns on it and no mix of other colours, that is it must not be bluish-green nor yellowish-green.

3. Pin the green fabric sheet to the bare wall.

The walls in our office are soft partition walls, so it was easy to use thumb tacks to pin the green sheet to the wall. Just ensure that it is well stretched to reduce creases.

4. Get two identical camera lights with stands.

A good green screen effect require good lighting. We use two identical 300 Watts AC-powered camera lights. They are the same portable lights we use in other shoots.

5. Position lights to illuminate the green screen evenly.

Pay very close attention to lighting the green screen evenly. We want the same light intensity on one side as well as on the other. Each light is positioned roughly 3 metres from the screen.

6. Position yourself between the wall and the lights.

The actor will stand about one metre away from the wall, adjusting his position and the lights till there is no shadow behind him. Remember, we only want mid shots.

7.  Record and have fun changing backgrounds.

Now comes the fun part. After recording, we use Sony Vegas Pro video editing software to remove the green backgound and replace it with any background that we want.

This “one-man” mini green screen studio is very useful for small business owners who want to make regular but unique YouTube videos to promote their expertise.
