SYNOPSIS
Harpagon, a rich widower, lives with both his children Cléante and Elise. He is an extreme penny-pincher and constantly suspects everybody of wanting to steal his casket full of gold. He informs his children of his projects which he hopes will bring him some money. Elise is to marry the old and rich Anselme and Cléante is to marry a rich, old widow. Harpagon will also get married to a young person, Marianne. Harpagon does not know that Cléante secretly loves Marianne and that Elise fell in love with the steward of the house, Valère. Both children fear to reveal their feelings to their father, but something must be done quickly because the weddings are planned on that day.
It is one of the most typical products of Moliere’s many sided genius: a double love affair, a clever schemer, some mocking servants and above all the miserliness of Harpagon, a sordid passion which totally absorbs his mind. All the surroundings are treated in the spirit of the liveliest comedy. The play still has a very modern tone: many of Harpagon’s actions and sayings have passed into proverbs.
